    Description

    This is a great sized
    ryoba-nokogiri
Japanese carpenters saw from the mid Showa era (c. 1960's). Super light weight and versatile with a rip blade on one side and a finishing blade on the opposite. Unlike European saws which cut on the push stroke this is the type of saw used in woodworking and Japanese carpentry that cuts on the pull stroke. This allows it to have a thinner blade that cuts more efficiently and leaves a narrower cut width (kerf) as well as a higher degree of control and accuracy impossible to obtain with western "push" type of saws. Because the blade is in tension during use, it can be thin and hard. This means a very sharp edge and exceedingly thin kerf. Ryoba Noko Giri are the mainstay of the Japanese woodworker.
It has the signature of the maker blade hand inscribed near the handle (see picture 3).
They have fine cross-cut or finishing teeth on one side and rip teeth on the other. Made of high quality laminated carbon steel and carefully milled by hand by a Japanese blade maker. Note the smaller teeth toward the handle end of the blade (see pictures). This was used to help make an efficient starting cut before proceeding with the larger teeth.
With exception of signs of past use, a small section missing at the top (see enlarged picture 7), a small ding (see picture 6), and some slight oxidation, this Ryba nokogiri is overall in
    good condition
throughout with sharp teeth as seen in the enlarged pictures. Measures 20" overall (51 cm). With a blade length (teeth area) of 8 3/4" long by 3 1/2" wide (22 x 8.5 cm). Old world craftsmanship for the new world craftsman! Once you have used a Japanese nokogiri saw you will never go back to a western push type saw!
