Original Slide(s)
Aerial Firefighting / Fire Bomber
Activity in Lemhi County, Idaho
w/aerial photos of Williams Lake
~ August 1966 ~
'Lot C'
((
Please note that these slides have better clarity & color & contrast than I was able to capture with my slide scanner. The darks are not so dark. The lights aren't as washed out as you see. The color in the originals is exceptional
)).
There's three cool aircraft slides related to aerial firefighting: the first two are really cool. The third one is nice too but I'm not sure it's gonna get you anywhere. The 4th and 5th slides are important because they helped me unravel the mystery to where these were taken and I absolutely, without a doubt, figured out where these aircraft were fighting fires back in August 1966: the name of the lake you see from above is Williams Lake, in Lemhi County, inside the Salmon-Challis National Forest.
Anyway ~ in the first image the red and white aircraft (a T-34). Marked beneath the wings and on the tail. On the closest wing you can make out "USFS" (United States Forest Service) Tail number is N144Z. The # N144Z is also written beneath the far wing but it's much in shadow. Please notice the wisps of smoke rising from the lower edge of the image. There's obviously a fire threat afoot.
The second slide shows a yellow TBM Avenger coming in for a pass over a hill covered in brush. Again there's a hint of smoke and the threat of fire. It could be Tanker #10 "Ole Smokey" / N4170A. It could also be Tanker #9 / N4169A of "Reeder's Raiders". I've seen both of these yellow TBMs in slides from Ralph Foster before.
The third slide shows the same USFS T-34 aircraft as seen in slide #1. The plane is small in a vast blue sky. With a good loop ~ the writing is clear and sharp on the undersides of the wings 'USFS' and 'N144Z'.
The fourth & fifth slides show beautiful aerial shots of Williams Lake in the Salmon-Challis National Forest. Cabins and such can be made out along the shore's edge. The sixth slide shows another aerial somewhere in the same vicinity. A large racing track can be seen. Ralph Foster loved his racing tracks.
Well - that's it - a strange but interesting and historic group of six slides.
