Description
This 28 inch rip saw is die stamped I.L. CLARK NEW YORK, a name I do not find in the Schaffer book. Without anyreference
I'm going to put out my opinion, which is most often all or partly wrong but I've handled hundreds of these old saws so
hoping
I've picked up on something over the years. The cut of the handle and the little extra character added to the nib just scream 1840's to me, that kidney shape of the hand hole with the sharper angles and bevels, those fat beads at the base of the top and bottom horn, the high grade wood, all line up as 1840's attributes. I'm sure there were a few making the old school English style saws even later but most often this style is found on 1840's saws, could be this is an English saw marked for an American client?
Chips, cracks, broken teeth, and lots of wear on the handle, I can't decide on the wood type, mahogany, rosewood? Has to be a tropical hardwood. I'm thinking the bottom split nut is a replacement, the patina is just a shade different, I could be wrong but that's my thinking. You gotta wonder how many of these can be out there?
