    Description

    Here we have an
Antique PAYNE & CO., SHEFFIELD, Steel Spine, Split-Nuts, Dovetail Tenon Backsaw, 12" Blade.
David Ward of Portobello Street, Sheffield, England was an edge tool maker and in business from 1824 - 1859. Henry Payne, an established edge tool maker, joined Ward and registered the Ward & Payne trademark in 1843. Payne passed away in 1850. I assume that prior to joining Ward he had manufactured a few saws?  I couldn't find any individual history for Payne. The spine is marked by the maker.
This 12" Steel Spine Back Saw is primarily designed for cutting Dovetails or Tenons.
The blade on this saw is in good condition with a very fine pitting to the surface.  There is no deep pitting or corrosion.  There are no chipped or missing teeth. The cross-cut blade is nice and straight with no bends or kinks.
The blade is sharp but should be checked before use.
The closed-style handle is tight on the blade and is held with three brass split-nut, saw nuts.
The handle looks like it was refinished by a previous owner and has a beautiful finish !  There are NO cracks. The horns are full length.
The blade has No etching. This saw appears to be an 11 tpi model. Overall saw length is 16-3/4". There are NO owner marks.
