    Description

DISSTON LARGE D-8 THUMBHOLE RIP SAW – HAND SHARPENED
Here is a fine rip saw for the woodworker who desires the finest tools. This is a large full width saw, 26” long, for rough work and fast dimensioning of wood in your shop before you do the precision work. A very good saw for heavier work like timber framing or dimensioning rough lumber. It is a large 5-ppi pitch and in good user condition and tuned-up ready for work. It is
    very clean
with a beautiful applewood handle. This saw is from the early1900's (1896-1917) and made by Disston & Sons in Philadelphia. It will perform superbly and last you a lifetime of woodworking.
    This
    D-8 thumb-hole rip
saw is perfectly straight with an aggressive
    5 ppi pitch
    , and
    7" width
at the heel. The fine aged apple wood handle has full length horns with the deep carved out thumbhole with a hand rubbed French polish finish. It is a skew back saw with a cover top handle that is set-in low for a fine balanced feel. That with the 5 brass saw screws; lock in the saw blade tightly. It is a comfortable form fitting handle locking in your hand with long flowing horns top and bottom offering good control when sawing. The thumb hole allows the left hand to join in on the action for long heavy ripping. Hand sharpened and ready to use, it is a saw with smooth - straight very fast sawing action. I meticulously fine-tuned this saw to perfection first jointing the tooth line and hand filing each tooth to get the perfect angles and size of each tooth. I filed a
    4 degree rake
which is a fine rake angle allowing smooth sawing action with aggressiveness of cut. Especially in harder woods or woodworkers who don’t use handsaws every day this is a great compromise angle. The saw has a good strong thickness at the teeth of .038" and .026" up higher at the skew back so it has a good tapered ground to allow less set with the teeth. I did fine tune the set so it cuts smoothly in kiln dried hardwoods yet a little more set so it also works smoothly in softer woods. It is not over set and cuts with no wandering or slop in the kerf. I tested this out with the softer Philippine mahogany as well as some harder oak wood, and it cuts fast and smooth. It has a clean saw plate and a clear readable etch and Disston quote of quality. If you have been looking for a good D-8 thumb-hole rip saw, this fits the bill.
This saw would be perfect for the woodworker who works with hand tools and who needs a good rip saw for hand dimensioning of lumber on saw horses, before your bench work or for rough timber frame out in the field. This is a saw that will last a lifetime and be handed down to your next generation.
If you are also looking for a fine crosscut saw check out my other sales for the Disston D-8 CC saw I am offering.

    ***********************************************************************
I have collected handsaws for over 25 years and have enjoyed learning the history of this industry. I have always worked with hand tools and was fortunate to teach woodworking for 30 years after my six years in the military. It was during this time that I realized the best way to get quality tools for my students was to recondition vintage tools. Having learned saw sharpening from my Japanese woodworking instructor at the University of Hawaii during the late 1970’s, I was able to cheaply supply my students with vintage quality saws to use in class.
I am not a professional saw doctor but have spent the last 30 years as a shop teacher and had to sharpen all my shop saws and other tools over the years. Those kids knew how to dull a saw and often I had to keep them after school for an hour when I saw them abusing a saw. That way they came to realize what I went thru to get a saw in perfect working order.
This consists of jointing the saw to get it straight, shaping and sharpening, re-jointing and re-sharpening, gently setting the teeth to get a smooth sawing action in the kerf, then final sharpening. Finally I lightly hone the edge with a fine stone and polish the blade- before testing the smoothness of the cut.
I have recently been selling many tools from my collection in fine condition to woodworkers who have emailed me with compliments on the quality of the tools and their ready to use condition.

I am a retired shop teacher, woodworker, and tool collector for over 25 years. I am a long time active member of many antique tool organizations including EAIA, Mid-West & CRAFTS of NJ. I was President of CRAFTS for over 10 years. I know antique hand tools and use them in my shop every day.
I use many pictures as they are worth a thousand words and count on them as part of my description. So look them over for all the little details they reveal. I have been selling antique tools continuously on eBay since 1998 and enjoy the friendship of my buyers.
