The color nude studio photograph is arguably one of the first COLOR NUDE taken by an American photographer in pinup fashion.  Cris was a celebrity photographer for publications and later worked together with Andy Warhol as chief photographer. Prior to WW2, color nudes were not yet allowed to be distributed legally in America. Nude photos were obscured in black and white or by pinup photos by hand drawing, such as likes by Earl Moran. Many nude photos seen during this time frame came overseas from Europe, which didnt have such laws in London and Paris (black and white).
The photo collection was not discovered until after Cris Alexanders death in 2012. Part of his estate went to the auction block and distributed through various bidders. These photos remained hidden throughout history and possibly the first Pinups taken by an American photographer on Kodachrome color.
This photo collection is #1 of 12, some of the models he choose have similar resemblance to celebrities of that era.
History-
Kodachrome 35mm was released as new breakthrough technology in 1936. In the series, Cris shows a transition from using previous technology to Kodachrome which the older method has faded sepia colors. There is only one photo in the collection with his name marked with 1941. The rest can be estimated to be taken from 1939-1941. During this time frame, Cris was a broadway actor, and possibly took photos with broadway girls.
Alfred Cheney Johnston might of been the pioneer of American cabaret photography with the Ziegfield follies showgirls in black and white. His nude pinup style photos currently being displayed was not discovered until 1971 after his death. Other photographers during this era were sent to jail for distributing nude works, therefor kept hidden. A similar scenario is seen with Cris where his nude works was not discovered until 80 years later in Color.
In price comparison, Alfred Cheney Johnston silver prints were auction off close to 00. Cris Alexander's 35mm slide is an original and none known reproduction. Some of the more famous photographers operated overseas in Paris and London. Man Ray would be fashion figure from Coco Chanel, Vogue, Harper Bazaar. Edward Weston was an American photographer known for abstract nude. Both of their originals have sold in auctions for 6-7 figures USD.
The golden years of nude photography sold were between the two world war eras. The rarity would be it coming from a American nude photographer using Kodachrome technology prior to WW2.
