Modern Carnival Glass
emerged in the late 1960s, when the Imperial Glass Company, along with the Fenton Art Glass Company, revived the genre by
re-issuing
many of their own Carnival Era patterns, and
reproducing
patterns using molds purchased from defunct glass makers. Many other glass makers, large and small, joined in the revival. The same process of spraying hot glass with proprietary solutions of metallic salts to produce iridescence was used on the new glassware. Modern glass however, due to its hardness, accepted the metallic salt solutions in a different manner, generally producing a "harsher" (some say gaudy) iridescence.
Joe St. Clair
began experimenting with color and molds in 1959, and began producing pressed glassware in 1960. After a fire in 1964, a new larger facility was erected and the St. Clair Carnival Era began. By 1967 Joe’s Carnival Glass was a great success using purchased molds for patterns such as Indiana Chieftain, Inverted Fan and Feather, Paneled Holly, and Holly Band. Joe and his brothers, with the help of Bill McElfresh began pressing glass two to three months each year, but continued creating beautiful handmade art glass the remainder of the time. Joe accepted an opportunity to “retire” in 1971. The factory was sold to Robert Courtney and Richard Gregg. Unable to sustain the business after gas and labor costs escalated, Courtney and Gregg sold the business back to Joe St. Clair, who brought it back to a small family operation, and worked there until his death in 1987.

Contemporary Condition
refers to the lack of production issues which plagued antique glassware. Modern glassware is relatively free of those production issues due to modernized machinery, advances in glass making chemistry, and quality control. Even so, because modern Art Glass is generally still hand shaped, hand-painted and/or hand-iridized, each piece is technically a one-of-a-kind, and you may still find a minor production issue from time to time.
Combined Shipping
is offered for both domestic and international shipment of multiple purchases. All items are bubble wrapped and cushioned with peanuts; no tape is used on the bubble wrap. Cartons are
labeled GLASS or FRAGILE, and
shipped in one business day; if I'm away then ASAP upon return.
All shipments are insured. International shipments will travel via USPS Priority Mail International for insurance and tracking purposes. The declared customs value may include the shipping charge, depending on your country's import policies.
