    This is an
    ATKINS RAKER GUAGE
used for sharpening two-man crosscut saws. It is marked E. C. Atkins & Co. Indpls, Ind and has numerous patent dates from May 5, 1874 to January 1888. (Inv no 0257) The raker teeth remove shavings that the cutter teeth have severed from the wood. For a saw to work best the raker teeth must be adjusted to type of wood and other factors. The depth of the rakers below the cutter teeth was determined by using a tool called a raker gage (gauge) or raker depth gage (gauge) (Warren Miller, Crosscut Saw Manual). This example has a dark patina and is in good used condition and all screws work, etc. About 5 1/4 x 2 ½ in size. Starting price is .95.Shipping weight is 13 ounces.
