Description
This huge antique Japanese saw ornokogiri
was hand forged by a Japanese master blade maker (see signature picture 6) nearly a century ago. It
is known as a
Madanoko
rip saw and has deep gullets interspersed between each set of five teeth. This allows more chips and wood debris to be carried away while cross cutting or ripping.
It is the type of timber saw used in woodworking and Japanese carpentry that cuts on the pull stroke, unlike European saws which cut on the push stroke. This allows it to have a thinner blade that cuts more efficiently and leaves a narrower cut width.
The thickness of this blade helped to create a straight "rip" cut down the length of a log.
Made of the high quality
laminated
carbon steel and carefully milled by hand by a Japanese master blade maker.
Note the smaller teeth toward the handle end of the blade (see picture 7). This was used to help make an efficient starting cut before proceeding with the larger teeth.
This timber nokogiri saw is complete with all teeth and along with a
dark aged patina,
it remains overall in
very fine condition
throughout, as seen in the enlarged pictures. All teeth are
complete and still in sharp
condition. A rare piece of character and quality from nearly a century past. It comes complete with a signed cryptomeria wood protective sheath that has a nice aged patina (see pictures 2 & 3).

This type of saw required an especially powerful kobiki-shokunin (sawyer) as seen in the 1830's Hokusai woodblock print in the last picture (not included).
Measures 39" overall (99 cm). With a blade length (teeth area) of 24" long by 8 1/2" wide (61 x 22 cm). Old world craftsmanship for the new world craftsman!
Its kiri (paulownia) wood handle has a warm aged patina.
